Plastrene er røntgensynlige takket være barium, og den blå farve gør dem visuelt detekterbare, da blå kontrastfarve sjældent findes i fødevarer.
Detekterbarheden af disse produkter afhænger af indstillingerne på metaldetektoren og typen af de producerede fødevarer (herunder produktsammensætning, størrelse, fugtighed osv.). Derfor er det vigtigt, at hvert detekterbart produkt testes på dine detektorer, før det tages i produktion.
